Thanks In All Seasons

Last night I shared parts of this poem / reflection
with a Bereavement Support Group:
There are no more pictures to be taken
But there are memories to be cherished.
For that, I am thankful.
There is a missing chair at the table
But the circle of family gathers close.
For that, I am thankful.
The stillness remains
But the sadness is smaller.
For that, I am thankful.
The calendar still turns, the holidays still appearing
And they still cost too much . . . but I am still here.
For that, I am thankful.
Love was once, and still is, a part of my being
For that, I am living – I am living
And for that, I am thankful.
Like the psalms, we are honest to face the changes,
even during the past year, and the harsh ones that will
remain. While retaining gratitude for the much more
that we have. And the strength and hope that helps us
continue. And love to celebrate. Even if in a quieter or
smaller way.
Some suggestions for those for whom holidays are
different this year:
1. Consider what personal / family traditions you want to
continue, and which you may want to change, at least
this time.
2. Prepare emotionally, physically and spiritually,
including with healthy daily habits, and prayer with
some journaling.
3. Recognize your limits, along with what is best for
others you will be gathering with.
4. Find ways to share and invite memories, including
humorous ones, of someone who is not here this year.
5. Consider a tradition (such as an Advent Wreath) that
incorporates appreciative memories as well as faith.
6. Find a way to give in a personal way, to another in the
family, to a lonely friend, or to those in need.
Thank God (in all seasons), no matter what happens.
This is the way God wants you who belong to Christ
Jesus to live. (1 Thessalonians 5, The Message version)
